
Prof Bismark Tyobeka

Prof Bismark Tyobeka assumed the position of Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the North-West University in South Africa, where he oversees the institution’s core functions of teaching, research, and community engagement. The university, ranked among the top seven in the country, is the third largest in South Africa. Before this role, Prof. Tyobeka served as the Chief Executive Officer of the National Nuclear Regulator (NNR) of South Africa until May 31st, 2022. He has an extensive background in nuclear engineering, having held positions at various organizations including Eskom Enterprises and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Prof Tyobeka also held leadership roles internationally, such as serving on the International Nuclear Safety Advisory Group (INSAG) and chairing the 6th Review Meeting of the Convention on the Safety of Spent Nuclear Fuel Management and Safety of Radioactive Waste Management. Additionally, he has been appointed to various national bodies, including the South African Council for the Non-Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction. He holds multiple degrees, including a PhD in Nuclear Engineering from Pennsylvania State University and master’s degrees from institutions in the USA and South Africa.
